Top 5 driverless mobility services 2021. The car industry and the technology industry

Has for the past five years developed and tested techniques for autonomous driving. As automakers (OEMs) focus on applying autonomous driving technology in our daily cars, technical startups focus more on leveraging technology to provide driverless mobility services. Although they use the same set of techniques, their target markets are completely different because they serve different purposes.

Note that full automation

does not necessarily mean driverless. In the consumer car market, the demand to eliminate the driver’s seat and steering wheel is low because the driver is probably the car owner and the car owner still probably wants to take control and enjoy driving from time to time. As such, autonomous driving techniques are mostly used to help the driver, not to replace them. However, this may change as soon as people slowly adapt to the trend.

On the other hand, elimination means

of the driver’s seat and steering wheel significant benefits for the market for mobility services as it allows the vehicle to transport more passengers and goods while saving the cost of hiring drivers. In 2021, the mobility industry expects to see a first wave of fully autonomous (SAE automation level 4 and 5), driverless vehicles driving on the road. Most of them are used to provide services for riding, sharing and delivering. In this blog we will take a closer look at a list of some of the early pioneers in driverless mobility services, along with their current position in 2021.

Zoox (a subsidiary of Amazon) – USA

Zoox is an autonomous driving technology startup founded in 2014 and sold to Amazon in June 2020. After six years of R&D along with prototype testing, it has finally put its robotic taxis into production and unveiled them on the streets of San Francisco in December 2020. The newly introduced robotic taxi is designed for to provide services for riding horses, tailored to narrow city streets. Given the specifications, it is an all-electric quad bike with a maximum capacity of four passengers,

equipped with eight LiDAR systems around the car. The most important features that set Zoox apart from its competitors are four-wheel steering and two-way driving. Built with four-wheel steering, the vehicle’s front and rear wheels move in opposite directions to maximize the turning angle, so that U-turns can be made on two-lane streets that would normally require a three-point turn. In addition, the vehicle is bi-directional so that pickups and drop-offs can be done seamlessly.

Zoox also claims that its

vehicles can travel at a top speed of 120 km / h, currently the fastest in the industry. Currently in its final testing phase, the company is preparing to launch a mobile-based ride-hailing service starting in San Francisco and Las Vegas. Starting with Google’s self-driving car project in 2009, Waymo has undergone intensive research and testing over the past decade. On October 8, 2020 – after 30 million kilometers of road testing, including tens of thousands of kilometers of off-road driving – Waymo finally introduced its first driverless driving service to the public in Phoenix, Arizona. Its mobile app is available for anyone to download, so that everyone in their service area can enjoy driverless rides.

Instead of manufacturing its own vehicles, Waymo collaborates with several car manufacturers to develop tailor-made vehicles for its services. The company is currently expanding its coverage of its ride-sharing service to other US cities. At the end of 2020, Waymo is the only driverless passenger car in the world that is in full commercial operation.

Nuro was founded

by two founders of Waymo and offers delivery services with driverless all-electric vehicles. Less than two years after the first launch of the Model R1 in December 2018, the Model R2 was finally released in 2020 and became the first autonomous vehicle to receive an approved exemption issued by the US Department of Transportation (DOT) and the National Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). This means that Nuro can now expand its coverage to a larger number of American cities.

Model R1 has completed various driverless delivery services by partnering with Walmart and Domino’s to deliver food and pizza to customers in Houston, Texas. Today, Nuros R2 is currently operating in three US states – California, Texas and Arizona. It has provided food and medical supplies to patients and physicians during the COVID-19 crisis. AutoX (supported by Alibaba and SAIC Motor) – China and USA

As the only Chinese company

on the list, AutoX is backed by investments from Alibaba and SAIC Motor. In December 2020, the company distributed 25 driverless robot axles on the roads of Shenzhen, China, for final stage testing. Making it the first driverless vehicle to travel on Chinese streets without the safety driver.

Chinese autonomous driving technology

Hubs like Shenzhen, Shanghai and Wuhan are quickly setting up 5G infrastructure and offering subsidies to welcome robotic taxi companies to set up their services. This is part of the Chinese attempt to compete with Silicon Valley. Nevertheless, AutoX also received a permit from California in December 2020 to test its robot ax on American roads. Just like Waymo, AutoX’s vehicles look like a normal passenger car from the outside. AutoX has not announced when these vehicles would be ready for public use. but Chinese consumers should expect driverless mobility services in the very near future.

Cruise is another autonomous

driving owned by General Motors. After Waymo, Zoox, Nuro and AutoX. Cruise became the fifth company licensed by the State of California to test driverless vehicles without safety drivers. In December 2020, the company also began testing its driverless vehicles in San Francisco. Cruise expects to slowly increase the number of vehicles on the road in 2021 while preparing them for commercial use.

The role of safety in driverless mobility

Safety is first class in the development of driverless vehicles. These vehicles must not only function properly, but they must also withstand cyber attacks. Therefore, all V2X communications must be protected with SCMS (Security Credential Management System). By issuing registration certificates to each member of the V2X network as well as authorization certificates for each communication message. AUTOCRYPT V2X takes over the safety aspect of all autonomous vehicles.
